GARY NORTH
has been fanning the flames of paranoia with his radio show, and his financial advice columns in Christian magazines since 1980. He has made numerous appearances on Christian radio talk shows, and has a newsletter for which he charges $225, and all you get is a few photocopied pages every few months. Apparently, part of the $225 price may be for the privilege of getting something in the mail from this self-proclaimed prophet. But what kind of prophet (more like profit) has Gary been? Pretty abysmal. In 1980, he predicted that the economy would soon collapse, that the government would ration food, housing, and that we would have a nuclear war with Russia. In 1987 he wrote, In 1992, we will run out of available hospital beds.... The world will eventually panic. When the first inklings of the Y2K bug hit the news, Gary predicted, A bank run like no other will bankrupt banks all over the world in 1999. He told listeners to his program to sell their houses, invest in guns, gold, and grain, and to move to remote areas to avoid Armageddon. We all know ]low every single one of these predictions came true, don t we? That nuclear war we had with Russia a few years ago really bummed me out. And when computers all over the world suddenly exploded at the dawn of the millennium, I knew that Gary was a true profit.

RANDALL TERRY
the founder of Operation Rescue (OR), appears to have been mentally unstable since the 1980s (possibly longer, from what his wife stated). In 1984, he publicly invited people on his nationally broadcast radio show to assassinate Dr. Warren Hem, director of a Boulder, Colorado abortion clinic. He also once brought an aborted foetus in a shoe box to a live TV news conference. And lie urged antiabortion activists to stalk the doctors and staff of abortion clinics, follow their children home from school, and generally harass them. As a result, Randall has been arrested many times over the years, spent many weeks in jails, and paid thousands of dollars in fines.

Evidently, all the crusading took a heavy toll on Randall s family, and they decided that it was better to cat, have enough money to pay bills, and have a stable life. In the year 2000, his wife had enough of it, and separated from him.

Even Terry s closest friends, think he went over the edge. Flip Benham, who now leads Operation Rescue, the organization started by Terry, says, on OR s website, It is with a profound sadness that I report to you that Randall has separated from his wife and family, from his church, and from all of us who have been running the race of faith with him. It is a self-chosen path.

PAT ROBERTSON
pretty much invented TV evangelism as we know it today. Okay, that credit is usually given to Billy Graham, but let me clarify why I think Pat deserves it. Pat Robertson founded the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN), which was the first Christian TV network. CBN was the first permanent Christian TV network to feature nationally syndicated shows on which the hosts would constantly beg for money. (CBN is international, now, and Pat s people beg for money on a global scale!). Pat Robertson got extremely wealthy with his network, and deserves all the credit for being a shrewd businessman.

He used to speak in tongues on his 700 Club. For the uninitiated, speaking in tongues is when insane people babble gibberish that is allegedly the language of angels. What it actually sounds like-and is-is gibberish, and prima facie evidence of insanity. But it s useful. Christian fundamentalists use it to convince ignorant, deluded people that they are truly touched by God. They re touched, all right. When Pat Robertson decided to run for President, in 1984, he mysteriously stopped speaking in tongues and conducting faith healings on his program. I guess God was giving him campaign advice.

He also started the Christian Coalition, which was an attempt to form a political party that would push the extreme Christian Fundamentalist agenda onto the American Subscribers to his ministry s various newsletters were sent voting checklists constructed by the Christian Coalition, which essentially told recipients whom God wanted them to vote for via favorable or unfavorable biographies. The checklists made it into the news because they were essentially a religious organization telling voters who to vote for, which violated the First Amendment s church-state separation clause, because of the Christian Coalition s tax exempt status as a religious organization. (In other words, the Christian Coalition, like all Christian organizations, has been riding on the backs of those of us who pay taxes. By engaging in partisan politics and backing reactionary, authoritarian candidates, they were, in essence, attempting to impose their fundamentalist agenda on us using in part our money.) The case was settled out of court, with the agreement being that the language of the future voting checklists would be written in such a way as to omit any language that recommended candidates to. Instead, the checklists listed pertinent issues, and noted where each candidate stood on each issue.

After being one of the biggest losers in the presidential race, Pat became close personal friends with two of the world s most murderous dictators. Presidents Charles Taylor of Liberia and Mobuto Sese Seko of Zaire let Pat open up gold and diamond mines in their countries. In payment, Pat tried to whitewash them, telling the American people what good men they were, and how their countries needed our support. It didn t seem to bother Pat that both Taylor and Mobuto are responsible for the massacre and torture of hundreds of thousands of citizens in their own countries.

You may have seen ads for Freedom Gold, Inc., which is one of Robertson s Liberian gold companies. They sell all sorts of phony commemorative gold coins on television. Reports on his operations in Zaire and Liberia reveal that they have been protected by armed troops of the respective governments, and that workers were often political prisoners working as forced labor.

Pat began to go completely over the edge of sanity back in the early 90s, when he started broadcasting horrifying reports about how the world was about to end. He had dozens of glitzy, highly polished commercials which advanced a paranoid world view that was beyond Orwellian. He did a telethon once, on which he suggested that in the near future the U.S. government would execute the elderly, hunt down and torture Christians, and get involved in a nuclear war. He published and wrote dozens of books that rehashed old John Birch Society paranoia. His remarks in 2001 about the World Trade Center destruction, for which he blames the ACLU and liberal politicians, have pushed him so far out on the fringe that, one hopes, maybe even other evangelicals will conclude that he s insane.

JERRY FALWELL
has always been a goof-ball, and he shows no signs of slowing down. He founded, and still is the chief pastor of the Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia. He founded the Moral Majority, which is closely tied with Don Wildmon s American Family Association. Both organizations are dedicated to promoting moralistic government intrusion into our private lives.
Falwell, in the 1960s, campaigned against the apostate Martin Luther King, claiming that if the Civil Rights Act passed, blacks would not stop there and would try to get special privileges next. He has since apologized for that.

In the 1980s, Falwell sued Larry Flynt, publisher of the tasteless porno magazine, Hustler, over a joke ad that featured bogus quotes from Falwell talking about how he had lost his virginity to his mother in an outhouse while chugging vodka. The trial went all the way to the supreme court, and is now legendary First Amendment history. (I confess that Flynt is a personal hero of mine.)

Falwell also runs Liberty University, a college that ensures parents that their kids will be brainwashed into being rabid, foaming-at-the-mouth, lunatic-fringe, conservative Republican Fundamentalist Christians. The college used to have rules prohibiting students from public displays of affection, interracial dating, protests of any kind, and dating without the written consent of one s parents. Well, things have changed a little since 1990. Interracial dating is no longer forbidden-provided that the kids get written consent from both parents.

Falwell has told many whoppers over the years-most of which I ve included in this pamphlet. Perhaps his most idiotic recent foible was the editorial he wrote in his newsletter, in which he accused Tinky Winky from the children s show Teletubbies of being gay, because the character was purple and carried a purse. Need I say more?

BOB ENYART
is proud to call himself America s most popular, self-proclaimed, right-wing, religious fanatic, homophobic, anti-choice, talk show host. (Yes, those are his own words!) Bob has a long and colorful history of making self-contradictory statements and acting in a hypocritical manner. Perhaps the best example of Bob s two-faced nature is found in his trial for beating his 16-year-old step son. Bob very frequently makes passionate rants against abortionists. He calls abortion the worst form of child abuse. But Bob, according to the trial transcripts, and by his own admission, beat his son with a leather belt until the boy was bleeding and his skin was covered with welts.

Bob s TV show, radio program, and Internet sites all promote his form of Calvinism. Listen to any of his shows, and it becomes obvious that he wants to shove his demented form of Christianity down the throats of Americans via the legal and political system. But when Bob was convicted and sentenced for the beating of his son, he whined, The D.A. is trying to force his private morality on us.

But that s not all. It gets better. Enyart has much material on his website about how the ACLU is a front for a Communist organization which seeks to destroy Christianity, yet it was the ACLU that defended his right to beat his son bloody during his trial! Bob advocates a return to monarchy in the USA, and also thinks that gays and atheists should be put to death. He has several web sites that promote his insane, militant form of Christianity

R. J. RUSHDOONEY
was an old time Calvinist who invented the modem doctrine of theonomy, or theologically based economy. He is the godfather of Christian Reconstructionism, the most authoritarian form of christian fundamentalism. Rushdooney is a prime inspiration for most of the movers and shakers of the religious right, including Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Gary North, and Bob Enyart. Rushdooney openly rejected the heresy of democracy and strongly advocates that the USA should become a monarchical theocracy, a form of government with an absolute ruler who would also be the spiritual leader. Rushdooney fervently desires the reinstatement of Old Testament punishments, especially the death penalty for gays, heretics, and atheists. An unapologetic racist, Rushdooney preaches segregation of the races and maintains, based on numerous biblical passages (e.g., Leviticus 25 4446, Exodus 21 26, Exodus 21 202 1, and I Timothy 6 1), that slavery is God s will.

This list includes quotes not only from contemporary religious nuts, but also from historical Christian figures, to illustrate that current Christian attitudes towards reason, science, freedom, and politics are well rooted in Christianity s past. Christianity, from its first ) ears in control of the Western World, has practiced and promoted racism, anti-Semitism, violence against women, superstition, distrust of science and medicine, and all too many other other nasty things.

With the recent rise of the Christian Fundamentalist movement, and its support of more and more extreme elements of the political far right, many people might be fooled into thinking that they offer something new (and hopefully pleasant). What I, and many others see, however, is that they are tip to their old tricks, arrogantly promoting prejudice, hatred, irrationality, intolerance, and sometimes outright murder, and that these things are most apparent when you read what they actually have to say.

On the Separation of Church and State
